“…first-raising, torn-jean, dead-in-the-gutter rock’n’roll action…”
– Sleazegrinder for Classic Rock Magazine
Sick of the same soul-sucking shopping mall tunes, or suffering from attention deficit with the dulltopia of ‘contemporary’ music? Time to medicate. The Oxys are back to wrangle you out of your cognitive drift with their newest offering, Casting Pearls Before Swine (Cleopatra Records). Inspired by the biblical warning, this album places the sublime and the unsophisticated cheek by jowl.
“Our latest release is the most insidious of our three albums,” says guitarist and songwriter Ginchy. “It’s a raw and unflinching exploration of the human experience, delving into themes of obsessive love, the psychology of killers, the power of reinvention, and a critical view of today’s complacent society. Listeners will find themselves on a visceral journey through life’s struggles, the grip of addiction, and the will to survive.”
Frontman Phil Davis adds, “Writing lyrics for this record allowed me to delve into complex themes like compulsion, toxic relationships, and an intense, almost cinematic killer vibe — highlighted by the haunting true crime story of my Great Uncle Joe Ball, also known as the Butcher of Elmendorf. The universal tension between human acts that harm, and yet stimulate us, is something I wanted to explore. My aim was to capture raw emotion and make it resonate powerfully with listeners.”
The band’s origins harken back to 2021 when Ginchy (Dead Boys, Sylvain Sylvain and the Sylvains) and Phil managed to smash the monotony of pandemic life by channeling their collective energy into music and creativity. It was a way to overcome the isolation, boredom, and uncertainty of the times. In December of 2022, they put out their first full length record, A Date With The Oxys (Dead Beat Records). Following much critical acclaim for their debut, they delivered Generation Irrelevant just 12-months later, again garnishing favorable worldwide press. With guitarist Genocide, bassist Michael Harpel and drummer Chris Alaniz completing the line-up, they hit the road with a mega-dose of post-pandemic vengeance. With the live show energy quickening their collective pulses, the band’s creative output also accelerated.
By the fall of 2024, The Oxys found themselves at Ice Cream Factory studio in Austin, TX, to start work on Casting Pearls Before Swine. After four short days, and a couple of grueling tracking sessions with expert knob twister Matt Parmenter, The Oxys had captured some of their best work to date. The sound files made their way across town to Ginchy’s home studio for a final mix. After that the tracks ended up in the hands of Jack Control at Enormous Door in conjunction with Maor Appelbaum for final mastering.
By the time the record was completed fearless rock’n’roll visionary Brian Perera had gotten hip to their sound and decided to bring them into the fold at Cleopatra Records. The Oxys were promptly added to the various artists compilation titled, Punk Rock Valentines, which put them in the company of Iggy Pop, Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers, Dead Boys, Fear, The Damned, and the UK Subs.
The full-length, Casting Pearls Before Swine, delivers 10 tracks of unapologetic punk rock ‘n’ roll, stripped of any pretense. Four-chord guitar-driven rock wrapped around dark anthems delving into murder, betrayal, personality disorder, lust, and toxic behavior. Four years wiser and four times more lethal, The Oxys’ Casting Pearls Before Swine might make you realize that maybe you haven’t been paying enough attention to these Austin, Texas rockers.
“…snotty and sleazy in all of the most delicious ways. Again, rock ‘n’ roll doesn’t need saving, but the Oxys are going to do it anyway.”
